The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum can be found in Weston, WV. Formerly known as the Weston State Hospital, this West Virginia facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill in the mid-1800’s. These photos are from an hour and a half long tour taken during the middle of the day in October 2012. I shot these photos with a Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 24-70 EF 2.8 lens. No tripod. The Mark II’s high ISO capability coupled with the 24-70’s low F stop allowed me to capture a lot of dynamic range without the use of a flash. None of these photos were shot in HDR.
The Lunatic Asylum is a pretty creepy place and a great opportunity to take some desolate looking shots. Many of the shots I took would be great for use as a background for compositing, but (I think) they are pretty strong by themselves as well.
