In the summer of 2012 I had the opportunity to take a midnight walk through DC armed with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 70 – 200 EF 2.8 lens. No tripod. The challenge was set – how to get sharp photos in the dead of night without a tripod. Fortunately the Mark II has excellent high ISO quality and the DC monuments are fairly well lit. All of these shots were taken at 6400 ISO with the exception of the long exposure shot of the fountain (ISO 640 on that one). F stop never went above 3.5 (again, except on the fountain shot). So if you are ever in this situation and wonder if you can get the shots, the answer is yes. As long as you can go high on your ISO and low on your f stops.
